The execution by hanging of Saddam Hussein on December 30, 2006 was seen by the world thanks to a video phone that someone snuck into the execution chamber. The death sentence was handed down for the 1982 slaughter of 148 Shi’ites in the town of Dujail. Saddam Hussein’s crimes against humanity finally caught up with him following the end of his rule in Iraq with the 2003 coalition advance into the country. The next day his body was taken to his birth place near the town of Tikrit for burial.
